Billionaire and Alibaba founder Jack Ma is said to be hiding in Tokyo with his family following the collapse of China’s biggest tech companies.
Ma, founder of online shopping giant Alibaba and once China’s richest man, has rarely been seen in public since criticizing Chinese regulators’ treatment of technology companies at a summit in Shanghai two years ago.
Citing anonymous sources, Ma is said to have lived in Tokyo with his family for nearly six months.
Ma reportedly spends her time going to ski resorts, a Japanese village, and regularly travels to the US and Israel.
Ma, known for his outspoken nature, has accused regulators of stifling innovation. His comments reportedly angered Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Chinese regulators have blocked the $34 billion sale of Alibaba’s online payments subsidiary Ant Group in what would have been the largest stock offering in history.
Beijing also ordered Alibaba to sell some of its media assets, including Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post.
A few months later, Alibaba was fined a record $2.8 billion for anti-competitive practices.
