American General Mark Milley has said that over 100,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the war in Ukraine, while the Ukrainian forces have, in all likelihood, a similar number of victims.
“Over 100,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded. It’s probably the same on the Ukrainian side,” added Milley.
The figures that Milley told him are the most precise that the United States has so far given, after more than nine months of fierce fighting in Ukraine.
Milley also pointed out that talks that would end the war are likely to happen, and that a military victory may not be in favor of either side — neither Ukraine nor Russia.
“There must be a mutual recognition that military victory, perhaps in the true sense of the word, cannot be achieved by military means, and therefore you must resort to other means,” added the American general, who emphasized that “there is an opportunity for negotiation”.
Milley’s comments come as Russia has ordered its troops to withdraw from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, a major blow to Moscow.
But officials in Kiev have reacted with a dose of caution, saying there is little chance that the Russian military will abandon the strategically important city without continuing the battle, and US President Joe Biden has said the withdrawal of Russian troops is proof that Moscow has “problems”. truths” on the battlefield”.
