Macron: France must be an independent nuclear power

France

French President Emmanuel Macron said today that France’s military strategy until the end of the decade should focus on strengthening the country as an independent and respected nuclear power.

“Europe is no longer protected against missiles and drones and we must accept this reality,” Macron said, speaking aboard the Dixmude helicopter carrier, docked at the Mediterranean military base of Toulon, which is home to more than 24,000 French troops.

Unveiling France’s national strategic plan, which should set out what the country’s defense will look like in 2030, Macron said Russian aggression against Ukraine could presage wider geopolitical rivalries and the future.

“France wants to be an independent, respected, agile power in the heart of Europe with strong ties to the NATO alliance,” Macron said.

The French president today visited France’s newest nuclear submarine, the Soufren, before meeting with members of the French navy later in the day.
