French President Emmanuel Macron will face potential legal trouble after prosecutors announced on November 24 that they were investigating the services of consulting companies during the 2017 and 2022 national election campaigns.
Although Macron’s campaign is not specifically mentioned in the financial prosecutor’s notice, his election team is believed to be the main target of two separate investigations.
The prosecution specified that since October they have launched two investigations into the use of consultants during the 2017 and 2022 elections.
These consultancy services have been in the spotlight since March this year after an investigation by the French Senate concluded that public spending on them doubled from 2018 to 2021, during Macron’s first term.
