The new Norway-Poland gas pipeline opens

Gas has started flowing to Poland through a new “Baltik Pipe” pipeline, says the country’s gas pipeline operator Gaz-System.

The pipeline, which runs from Norway through Denmark, is a major part of Poland’s effort to wean itself off dependence on Russian gas.

However, work on the pipeline began years before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.

The gas started flowing shortly after 4am this morning (UK time) and the pipeline has an annual capacity of 10 billion cubic metres.

It comes a day after leaks were discovered in the Nord Stream gas pipelines linking Russia to Europe, although Russia cut gas supplies to Poland in April after Poland refused Russia’s request to pay in rubles.

Otherwise, sabotage is the most likely cause of damage to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines.
