British police are investigating the attack on a Hong Kong pro-democracy protester who was assaulted outside the Chinese consulate in Manchester.
Footage shows protesters storming the consulate’s doors as a man holding a satirical poster of President Xi Jinping is attacked by several others.
The demonstration outside the consulate, about which the police had been informed, was held on the opening day of the Communist Party Congress in Beijing, which is expected to give President Xi a third term.
On Monday, the Chinese government denied knowledge of the aggression.
“I am not aware of the mentioned event. Chinese embassies and consulates in Britain have always acted in accordance with local laws. We hope that the British side will provide our diplomatic offices with the normal performance of obligations arising from the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” said Wang Wenbin, spokesman for the Chinese government.
The pro-democracy activist stated that he was raped by two people who came out of the consulate to tear the demonstrators’ posters.
