The Prime Minister of Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic, has said that Croatia expects to overcome the last formal hurdles on its way to become part of the borderless area of the European Union Schengen.
The prime minister said that the Balkan country expects to become part of the Schengen area on January 1, 2023.
Plenkovic has emphasized that Croatia has met all the necessary requirements to become part of the Schengen area, while adding that the country is ready to provide further clarifications to all those who want it, so that the country can joins Schengen on January 1, 2023.
He further added that a committee of the European Parliament is expected to give a positive opinion in this regard.
Plenkovic expressed his support for the other two European Union member states, Bulgaria and Romania, on their way to become part of the Schengen Area.
Earlier, the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said that he supports Schengen membership for the three Balkan countries, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia.
The German chancellor also said that the three countries met all the necessary requirements to become full members of the Schengen area.
