Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal arrived in Berlin on September 3 for talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, becoming the first high-ranking Ukrainian official to visit Germany in months.
The visit signals an end to tensions between the two countries, as Kiev has criticized Berlin in the past for providing little help in Ukraine’s fight against Russian occupation.
Scholz visited Kiev in June, and arms shipments to the country have increased since then.
“Germany has made great progress in its support of Ukraine with weapons,” Shmyhal told German media before the trip.
He added that Kiev needs more weapons, especially “modern battle tanks” like Germany’s Leopard 2. Shymhal also said his country was prepared to supply Germany with electricity to help Europe’s largest economy reduce its dependence on Russian energy imports.
