Hungary will not support the new package of European sanctions against Russia, whether they are exclusively energy sanctions, a senior Hungarian government official has ordered.
We recall that yesterday, EU officials have proposed a new package of sanctions against Russia, which include limiting the price of Russian oil and other restrictions on goods from the field of information technology.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has said that the purpose of the new sanctions is to “make the Kremlin pay” for the escalation of the war against Ukraine.
He promised that the EU would impose price limits on Russian gas to “help reduce revenues and keep the global market more stable.”
Gergely Gulyas, head of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s office, explicitly said today that Hungary opposes the new sanctions against Russia.
“Hungary has already done a lot to preserve European unity, but if there will be energy sanctions in this package, then we cannot support them,” added Gulyas.
“We are waiting for the final list of sanctions and then we can discuss them. Hungary cannot support the energy sanctions”, the head of Orban’s office said, among other things.
