The young King Charles III made his first decision as king, ordering 17 days of mourning for his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, instead of the expected 10 or 12.

Although the details of the funeral are not yet known, it is believed that the funeral will take place 10 days after the Queen’s death and Charles III has ordered a further seven days of mourning after the funeral.

The royal family, along with the other seven days of mourning announced by Charles, will observe a total of 17 days of mourning.

The flag at Buckingham Palace was lowered to half-mast on Thursday at 6.30pm. By the time Charles III is named king, he will rise and later sit back at half-mast.

Many people outside the door began to cry and take pictures as a helicopter circled in the sky.

The flag will remain lowered until the last day of mourning and must be raised the same day at 8 am. All residences will be closed. Flowers can be left in front of them.

Queen Elizabeth died yesterday afternoon aged 96 at Balmoral Castle.
