Anti-LGBTQ protests in Istanbul

Istanbul

Several thousand anti-LGBTQ demonstrators marched in Istanbul. They demanded the closure of all LGBTQ associations and a ban on their activities.

This was the largest protest of this kind in Turkey. One of the organizers said they have collected more than 150,000 signatures to demand a new law banning what they call LGBTQ “propaganda”.

The protest has sparked outrage among LGBTQ associations and other rights groups around the globe.

ILGA Europe, which works for equality, tweeted that Turkey must ensure the protection of all its citizens.

LGBTQ parades have been banned in the country since 2015, and there is general concern that the rights of this community are increasingly eroding.
