Nancy Pelosi makes a statement after arriving in Taiwan.
Nancy Pelosi and members of a US congressional delegation issued a statement shortly after arriving in Taiwan.
This visit is the first official visit to Taiwan by a speaker of the United States House of Representatives in 25 years.
“The visit of our congressional delegation to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to support Taiwan’s vibrant democracy,” the statement was quoted as saying at the beginning.
“Our visit is part of our wider Indo-Pacific journey – including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan – focused on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance.
Our discussions with Taiwan’s leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and promoting our shared interests, including the advancement of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
America’s solidarity with Taiwan’s 23 million people is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy,” the statement was quoted as saying, among other things.
Her visit comes despite warnings from China, which even on Tuesday engaged several planes that flew close to the “line” that separates the Taiwan Strait.
