Judge Anna Sotnikova has sentenced WNBA star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison and 1 million rubles (16,000 euros).
Griner said in court that he had no intention of endangering the Russian population. “I never wanted to hurt anyone, I never wanted to endanger the Russian population, I never wanted to break any law here.”
“I have made an honest mistake and I hope in your decision that my life does not end here. I know that everyone continues to talk about the political hostage and politics, but I hope that this is far from this courtroom”, she said today during the trial.
She has been playing for the Russian club UMMC Ekaterinburg since 2013 on and off.
