Two Russian MiG-31 fighter jets allegedly violated Finnish airspace on Thursday morning near the coastal city of Porvoo in the Gulf of Finland, the Finnish defense ministry said.
The Ministry’s communications director, Kristian Vakkuri, said the planes were flying west and were in Finnish airspace for two minutes.
“The alleged violation was one kilometer inside Finnish airspace,” he said, but did not elaborate on whether the planes were escorted outside Finnish territory.
The planes were identified by the Finnish air force and the border guard has launched an investigation into the breach, the ministry’s statement continued.
