China reacts after the arrival of Pelosi in Taiwan.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, calling it a “serious violation of the One China principle” that will have a “severe impact” on the political foundation of China-US relations.

In a statement, the ministry said Pelosi’s visit “seriously undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

“It seriously undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and sends a seriously wrong signal to separatist forces about ‘Taiwan independence,'” the ministry was quoted as saying.

Thus, China asked the US to “stop playing the ‘Taiwan card’ and meddling in China’s internal affairs and ‘stop going down the wrong and dangerous path'”.

Otherwise, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, arrived in Taipei on Tuesday.

Her plane reportedly landed at Songshan Airport in Taipei at around 10.45pm local time on Tuesday.

She was hosted by Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and US Representative to Taiwan Sandra Oudkirk and is expected to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday morning.

Her visit comes despite warnings from China, which even on Tuesday engaged several planes that flew close to the “line” that separates the Taiwan Strait.

Nancy Pelosi is making the highest-level trip in 25 years by a US government official to Taiwan, a self-governing island that China’s Communist Party claims as part of its territory.

Chinese officials, including leader Xi Jinping in a phone call last week with President Joe Biden, have warned of unspecified countermeasures if such a visit takes place.
