American Congressmen arrived in Taiwan.
Shortly after the visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, a delegation of American congressmen arrived today for a two-day visit to Taiwan.
The five-member delegation, led by Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, will meet with Taiwanese officials to discuss US-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade, investment and other issues, the American Taiwan Institute said.
Taiwan television showed footage of a US government plane landing at Songshan Airport in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital.
As stated in the press release, the meeting is taking place as part of the Congressman’s broader visit to the Indo-Pacific region.
“Especially at a time when China is increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and in the region with its military exercises, the delegation led by Markey once again demonstrates the strong support of the US Congress for Taiwan,” the Taiwanese leader said.
Earlier today, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense announced that it had spotted 22 Chinese military aircraft and six navy ships in and around the Taiwan Strait.
Tensions in the Taiwan Strait and across the Asia-Pacific region rose after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan on August 2 and 3, after which the Chinese military held several days of large-scale exercises.
