WHO: Vaccines do not reduce the spread of the virus.
Vaccines against Covid-19 may have saved millions of lives, but they have not significantly reduced the spread of the virus, declared the World Health Organization (WHO).
The organization called on researchers to develop new vaccines that reduce infections: otherwise there is still a risk of developing viral variants against which vaccines are less effective.
“Vaccines that are easier to administer than before, such as nasal sprays, and traditional methods.
Even where 70% vaccination coverage is achieved, if significant numbers of health care workers, the elderly, and other at-risk groups are not vaccinated, deaths will continue, health systems will remain under pressure, and global recovery will be in jeopardy danger”, emphasized the Director General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
WHO has also updated its vaccination goals. It now aims to vaccinate 100% of health workers, people over 60 and people at particular risk due to pre-existing conditions in all countries of the world twice.
