Russian missiles hit the port of Odesa.
Russia launched a ‘savage’ airstrike on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa just hours after signing an agreement to ensure the safe passage of grain out of the country.
Kalibr missiles fell “like a torrent” on the Black Sea dock before noon local time, residents’ footage showed.
Ukrainian air defense technology intercepted two missiles in the air, but was unable to intercept two other targets.
And the brutal airstrikes “broke” the agreement to unblock important grain exports blocked at three ports, including Odesa, signed on Friday in Istanbul.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry today asked the UN and Turkey to implement the agreement, which will enter into force in the coming weeks, following the attacks.
In this regard, the US ambassador in Kiev, Bridget Brink, called the attack “wild”. She tweeted: “Russia hits port city of Odesa less than 24 hours after signing deal to allow agricultural export shipments.”
Putin’s grain embargo, imposed since the start of the aggression on February 24, has blocked tens of millions of tons of food destined for the Middle East and Africa.
Friday’s deal was aimed at averting a crisis among tens of millions of people in the poorest countries.
According to the plan, Ukrainian officials would guide the ships through safe channels through the waters – to three ports, where they would be loaded with grain.
