Justin Trudeau visits the Ukrainian city of Irpin.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made an unexpected trip to Irpin, said the local mayor.

In a statement to the Telegram, Mayor Alexander Markushyn said: “I just had the honor to meet with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who came to Irpin to see with his own eyes all the horror that the Russian invaders have caused our city.”

The Ukrainian city of Irpin, located northwest of the capital Kiev, was temporarily held by Russian troops at the start of the war before withdrawing from the region.

Trudeau’s visit comes after he and US President Joe Biden underlined their commitment to hold Russia responsible for its invasion of Ukraine in a phone call on Friday.

During the conversation, the leaders also discussed efforts to provide security assistance to Ukraine, the White House said in a statement.

The First Lady of the United States, Jill Biden, also paid an unannounced visit to Ukraine today.

She traveled to Uzhhorod, Ukraine where she met the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska.
