Zelensky makes a surprise visit to the hospital.
Some children left orphaned during the siege of Mariupol and removed from Russian-controlled territory received a visit from President Volodymyr Zelensky to their hospital in Kiev.
Ten-year-old Ilya Matvienko and 12-year-old Kira Obedinska both suffered injuries and lost their parents in the Russian bombing of their homes.
Russian forces then rounded them up and drove them out of the city into enemy territory, according to the President’s official website.
Ukrainian authorities managed to return the children from the “Russian clutches” to the Okhmatdyt’s National Specialized Children’s Hospital and to their grandparents.
A video posted on Volodymy Zelensky’s Facebook page showed that Ilya Matvienko was clearly delighted to receive an iPad from his president on his birthday while his grandmother and doctors watched.
If the death toll in this city reaches 20,000, it would make up almost 5 percent of the pre-war coastal city population of over 400,000.
