Ukraine should not be offered membership in the EU.
Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg believes that the European Union should not offer Ukraine membership in the European family.
He made these comments during a summit last week. Schallenberg is for close cooperation – that is, between Ukraine and the EU, but that currently does not consider that it should be a member of the European family.
Austrian media meanwhile, reports that Schallenberg is in favor of this country being part of the EU economic zone, but to maintain its status quo.
As a reason why Ukraine should not be granted membership candidate status this June, he mentioned that the Western Balkan countries are holding membership talks.
Ukraine has long called for membership in the EU family, but these calls have become even more frequent since the start of Russian aggression in Ukraine.
On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that his country is fearing close relations between Ukraine and the West.
