The supercomputer in Europe arrives in Barcelona.
Barcelona with the new supercomputer Mare Nostrum 5, whose installation is expected to be completed at the end of this year, will return as a leader on the European map of supercomputers.
Mare Nostrum 5 will be 15 to 20 times more powerful than the current version Mare Nostrum 4, which is the second most powerful supercomputer in Europe and 13th in the world, where it is 10 thousand times faster than the generation the first of this computer produced in 2004, which at that time was considered the most powerful in Europe.
Work on the installation of the latest version of the supercomputer has already begun at the computer center in Barcelona (BSC). The Mare Nostrum 5, which should be ready for work next year, will have a maximum processor power of 200 petaflops, which means it will perform 200 billion operations per second.
It will be used for medical research, including drugs, vaccines and simulations of the spread of a virus – as well as for climate change predictions – the development of artificial intelligence and numerous other studies.
The total costs for the purchase, installation and operation over five years amount to 223 million euros, half of which will be financed by the European Union.
Mare Nostrum 4 last year won 47.2 million euros, of which 9.2 million from the Spanish and Catalan governments, and another 21.6 million from the European Commission.
