Moldova reacts harshly to Russia

Moldova reacts harshly to Russia.

Moldova has said it is deeply concerned by comments made by a Russian general about its sovereignty.

On Friday, Moldova summoned the Russian ambassador to give a note of protest over statements by Russian General Rustam Minnekayev, who claimed that Moscow wanted to invade southern Ukraine to gain access to the Moldovan region, Transnistria.

Minnekayev said at a defense industry event that broader control of Ukraine would pave the way for the Russian military into the Russian-backed separatist region of Transnistria.

Since Russia launched its attacks on Ukraine on February 24, fears have grown that Moldova could be Russia’s next target. Moldova is not a member of the European Union or NATO.

The war has pushed Moldovan officials to speed up the EU membership process, where they submitted their application last month. The process, however, is likely to take many years.
