Russia hacked European satellites before the war.
U.S. government officials said that the Russian military was responsible for a cyber attack on a European satellite Internet service that affected Ukrainian military communications in late February.
According to foreign media, the hacking affected the KA-SAT broadband satellite network, owned by Viasat, an American satellite communications company.
On February 24, the day the Russian occupation of Ukraine began, the KA-SAT network was hit by outages affecting Ukraine and surrounding regions in Europe.
A few days later, Viasat blamed the disruptions on a “cyber event”, but gave no further details.
Although Ukrainian officials have not fully disclosed the impact, the disruption is believed to have caused significant communication disruptions at the start of the war.
The National Security Agency (NSA) was reportedly cooperating in an investigation with Ukrainian intelligence services, but the results have not been officially released. However, anonymous officials reportedly said that US intelligence analysts had now concluded that Russian military hackers were behind the attack.
