NATO may need to increase its forces in the east.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg has just spoken at a news conference, saying that Russia’s aggression has created a “new security reality” in Europe.
He believes that NATO’s military position should be ready for this new reality.
Otherwise, tomorrow NATO leaders will begin to discuss concrete measures to strengthen security in the longer term, says Stoltenberg.
On the ground, these measures could involve “substantially more forces” in the eastern part of the alliance, he says, in a state of higher alert.
We will also consider “major increases” in our naval and air deployments, strengthening missile and air defenses, and also increasing cyber defense, the NATO chief added.
Stoltenberg stresses that strengthening defense in the alliance will require more money, and he has welcomed moves by Germany and other NATO allies in this regard.
