Alzheimer’s drug discovered

An experimental Alzheimer’s drug has slowed the progression of the brain disease for the first time. Researchers cannot yet predict the effects of this discovery on the patient’s quality of life, but the discovery is seen as a new hope after constant disappointments for a more dignified treatment.

“The results of the clinical trials showed that the drug “Lecanemab” slowed down the progression of the disease. And we believe that this gives hope to patients and doctors, stimulates more research on Alzheimer’s and nervous diseases”, says Dr. Michael Irizarry, specialist.

About 1,800 people in the early stages of the disease participated in the study. The drug delayed the deterioration of the patients’ condition by about 5 months.

“We understand that this is not a cure and we are trying to understand what it means to slow down Alzheimer’s, since this is the first time”, Maria Carrillo emphasizes.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration is considering accelerating the approval of Lecanemab. The decision could be made in early January.

Almost all existing treatments for the millions of Alzheimer’s patients worldwide only relieve symptoms.
