Bride in bloody dress after groom is shot dead in Mexico

A groom was shot dead in Mexico just moments after getting married over the weekend.

Marco Antonio Rosales Contreras, 32, was leaving his wedding ceremony at the Neustra Señora de La Candelaria church in Caborca around 5:00 p.m. local time on Saturday when he was shot.

Witnesses later said the shots came from a single, unidentified man, who ran away.

Antonio, a computer engineer from Guadalajara, was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.

Video footage shows his new wife accompanied by others, her white wedding dress stained with blood.

Antonio’s sister, Michelle Adriana, 23, was also shot in the back. She was treated at the hospital and released a few hours later.

On Sunday night, state officials announced that no lines of inquiry had been ruled out.

According to the Sonora Attorney General’s Office, Antonio’s killing was a “direct attack,” although they believe the bullets may have been intended for someone else.

“Investigations indicate that the attack against Marco Antonio was directed at another individual who was also getting married at the same time in another nearby town,” the statement said.

Another man was also shot at his wedding in a neighboring town the same night, according to authorities.

Located in the northwestern corner of the country, Caborca is home to a cartel named after veteran “narcotics” Rafael Caro Quintero.

Caro Quintero was arrested in July and is awaiting extradition for the 1985 killing of a US Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

Violence is a growing concern in Caborca, as the local drug-trafficking network wages war on an armed branch of the Sinaloa cartel.

Drug trafficking has also led to bloodshed in other parts of the country.
