Germany rejects the activation of Nord Stream 2.
The German government has rejected suggestions that it could activate the “Nord Stream 2” pipeline from Russia to compensate for reduced gas flows through Ukraine.
An energy ministry spokeswoman said on Wednesday that Germany is currently getting a quarter less gas through Kiev after Ukrainian authorities closed a pipeline saying it does not control the main station as it is in Russian hands.
Annika Einhorn, a ministry spokeswoman, said the shortfall was being partially offset by increased supplies from Norway and the Netherlands.
“Nord Stream 2 is really dead after the Russians invaded Ukraine and no one is thinking of keying it in,” she said.
The German official also noted that most Russian gas arrives in Germany through a sister pipeline, “Nord Stream 1”, and not through Ukraine.
Otherwise, Germany has pledged to end Russian natural gas imports by 2024 at the latest.
