Volvo invests in StoreDot

Volvo invests in StoreDot.

Volvo Cars, through its venture capital arm – Volvo Cars Tech Fund – has made an investment in StoreDot, an Israeli company that develops ultra-fast rechargeable battery technology.

According to foreign media, StoreDot is working on the predominant silicon lithium ion cells, which promise to offer a very high charge rate – recharging for 160 kilometers should only take 5 minutes. This new technology, called “100in5”, is expected to reach “mass production” by 2024.

Of course, we have to keep in mind that charging performance depends not only on the battery itself, but also on other elements, including the available fast charging power and charging standards. If we assume that an electric vehicle requires 25 kWh to travel 160 kilometers, then a 5-minute charge would require a power of approximately 300 kW.

The question is whether StoreDot technology will allow such a rhythm to be maintained in a wide state of charge (State of Charge, SOC) window or whether it is simply a maximum number for an optimal range – for example 20-50 percent SOC.
